<image:caption>I was so fortunate to experience the Spring Equinox in Mnajdra! I loved the experience of waiting for the sun to travel through the door, onto the floor and finally lighting the altar - just as people did 5000 years ago! Then, a bonus - a little after sunrise, once the crowd had dissipated, a small group of women unexpectedly celebrated the Equinox with song and drums. Here, a woman standing in front of the altar holds her drum to catch the renewing rays of the sun.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the years, the fort has played a crucial role in the defense of Malta It repulsed a sea attack from the Turks during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 during the Knights Period (1530-1798). During the British Period (1800-1964), it was an important military installation and became a base for the Royal Navy. It suffered 69 direct hits during WWII.</image:caption>

A plaque inside the chapel states it was the first one built in the surrounding region, in the year 1090, though scholars believe it may originate from the time of St. Paul, AD 60. The painting above the altar was reproduced after WWII bombs destroyed it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The cotton yarn is first hand-spun by Mayan girls and women, who then use natural plant dyes extracted from roots, berries, and flowers to create colorful skeins of yarn. Interestingly, the blue dye creates a different shade if the plant is harvested during the full moon. Traditional backstrap looms are used to weave beautiful textiles, with a table runner taking up to two months, and ten hours a day to complete.</image:caption>
